Martin Baker and Ann (Hannah?) Clark
My great5grandparents, Martin Baker and wife, Ann (Hannah?) Clark, along with
their son, James, and wife, Elizabeth, and Ann's brother, Francis Clark,
moved from Halifax Co., VA. to Garrard Co. about 1788. They ran a
mill on Sugar Creek. (I'd love to know where; I have driven along
the little creek slowly looking for a likely spot. Probably no records
exist today.)
Martin died about 1820 in Garrard Co. where his will has been found.
His wife was still alive then, but there is no record of her death nor
where they were buried.
James and Elizabeth (Fuqua?) had at least 7 children in Garrard Co.
though James is thought to have died in Mercer or Anderson Counties.
Their known children were:
Beverly b. 1789, mar. Isabel Sneed. They have MANY descendants, still many in the area, Washington Co.,
esp.
Susannah b. 1791, mar. Henry Taylor & John Huffman
Henrietta Maria b.1793 mar. Wm. H. Hubbard, moved to Owen Co.,
IN.
Sallie b. 1795 mar. Richard Cambron (No further info)
Henry b. 1796, mar. Kitty Carlisle & KIA, War of 1812
Thomas b. 1803, mar. Clarissa Rice (Many descendants), no children.
Martin, b. 1796, mar. Cassandra C. Colquitt ( his first cousin!) 1815,
& Eliza Rice. He is my great4grandfather.
I have found descendants for almost all of these children of Martin's.
Joan Colbert Gioe, in her booklet, GARRARD COUNTY KY. RECORDS &
WILLS: 1796-1833 AND POTPOURRI, (A booklet with NO sources
listed!) lists more children for James and Elizabeth Fuqua Baker:
Allen b. 1788
Bassel b. 1806
Bingin b. 1796
David b. 1796
Hiram b. 1799
James b. 1797
John b. 1790
William b. 1804
I am seeking confirmation of these births and also their families' names.
No one (The History Center, the Archives, The Filson Society, etc.)
has been able to discover where Gioe found this information.
