war invalid file 25564, kept his discharge as follows: the above, a
private in Capt Bledsoe's company is discharged the said Handley
having received wound in his ankle in an encounter with the enemy,
the said Hendley having behaved with that bravery and courage and
entitle him not only to the aid and good officers of friendship from
all free American citizens but also to be held in that respect which
a brave and firm soldier always receives. Given under my hand, at
Fort Winchester this November 1 1812. Signed John Payne, B.G. On
the back of the above discharge are the following words: The ____
will draw rations at public stores on his return to Kentucky 20 days

14-1813 I do certify that Elkana Handley is unqualified to do duty
as a militiaman in consequence of a wound he received in his ankle
serving as a volunteer in the company of Capt. John Edmiston, Col
Allen, rifle regiment under the command of General Winchester,
signed John T_____ surgeon 8th regiment, Kentucky
Militia. Shelby
Co, Ky. I Bland W. Ballard, late a captain in the first regiment of
Kentucky, volunteer militia in the service of the U.S. do certify on
honor that on or about 25th day of Sept 1812 while in the
service of the U.S., in the left wing of the Northwestern Army under
the command of Brigadier General James Winchester, our march from
Fort Wayne down the Miami River, I was in advance of the army with a
company detached as spies and had an action or skirmish with the
Indians in which Elkanah Hendley then acting as a sergeant in my
said company of spies he being detached from a company of Captain
John Edmonson of said regiment was wounded in the ankle by a musket
rifle ball, said Hendley remained with the army some time and was
then discharged or permitted to return on furlough.

Ballard. Affidavit:
I Morton D Hardin late Major Commandant of said regiment do certify
that said Hendley was brought to the army wounded as above described
and that his wounds had not healed well when he left the army. From
P.M. Dudley’s _____ (illegible) it appears that E. Hendley a
private in Captain R. Bledsoe’s company was paid from the 15th
of October 1812 to the 30th October 1812 date of his
