FAYETTE COUNTY KENTUCKY - The soldier enlisted 1813 as a regular soldier for five years of Captain Caleb Holder, in Richmond, Madison Co, KY to serve in the 17th Regular U.S. Infantry, that he was marched to Lexington, from there to Detroit and from there to Mackinaw, thence to Nalden? thence to Fort Erie, and after peace out to Benhalor? thence to St. Louis, thence to Cincinnati thence to Detroit, thence to Fort Harrison where he was discharged by Major Chinn. That this regiment was commanded by Col Miller, that while in the service of the U.S. and in the line of his duty from cold and injuries, he was affected and disabled and lost the use of his right arm and a sore neck and to have bones taken from his neck.
That he gave his discharge to Capt Holder to obtain his land bounty and supposes it is now lodged in the office where land bounty warrants issued, in the war department, that Captain Holder is dead and has kept his discharge if not lodged as before stated; that he has been made invalid from his injuries received while in the service for life, that he was discharged at Fort Harrison and that Dr. McCullough who was at Lexington is now dead.
Richard Kinney made affidavit, states that he entered as a regular soldier in Captain Benj W Sanders Company in the 17th regiment of infantry in 1817, that he well knows John Baker who belonged to Captain Holder's company of the same regiment; that in 1817 was healthy and stout and sound man when he first enlisted, but has been rendered an invalid because of his exposure and etc. in the service.
R. Pindall makes similar affidavit.
Under date of Feb 9-1858 personally appeared Cynthia Baker a resident of the county of Fayette and state aforesaid, aged 73, a resident of Fayette County, widow of John Baker and has received benefit of the widow's pension that was due up to his death. That she was married to said John Baker April 30-1817 and she presents the records of the county court clerk of Madison county for the evidence of her marriage and her husband, John Baker, died in the 22nd of October 1856 in Lexington, Ky; that her husband was operated on at one time by Doctors Statawhite and Pinder of Lexington. She has at this time one daughter an? one? child only under the age of 16 years. Her daughter Palina Baker was born on the 9th day of May 1842 and she has no family record of ages of her children and the said "Baker" is the only child her father John Baker had at the time of his death under the age of 16 years. I, Surilda Baker, a daughter of the late John Baker and Cynthia Baker, who has made the foregoing declaration, a resident of Fayette Co, Ky aged 33; that she has heard her mother's declaration read and fully explained to her and believes it contains the truth. She knows of her personal knowledge her father dies on the 22nd day of October 1856 from the wounds he had in his head and neck, which caused his death; states that her sister Palina Baker was born May 9-1842 and that she is the only child that her father left at his death under the age of 16 and that her mother is still living a widow and the said Palina is still alive.
I Ellen Baker of Fayette Co, Ky state that I will be 18 years of age on the 10th day of March next and that my mother's declaration was read and fully explained which I believe contains the truth, she is still a widow and Palina Baker is the only child, who was under age at the time of John Baker's death and is now living with my mother Cynthia Baker.
One John Krusar made affidavit that he knew John Baker and all about his many sufferings, likewise affidavits to the same effect by name of D.L. Wayman, W.W. Otes, Jeremiah Reynolds.
The marriage record of John Baker and Cynthia Hutchison, who were married April 30th 1817, by Jonathan Kidwell, in the state of Kentucky Madison County, said certified copy is filed herewith the papers.
She was married to him shortly after his return from the services and knows he was sound and healthy except for the wounds received while in the service.
