Kentucky Licensed
Professions: State Archived Files
If your ancestor was an architect, attorney, chiropractor,
dentist, doctor, engineer, or nurse licensed in the Commonwealth
of Kentucky, archived licensure files may provide information not available
elsewhere. Information on individuals
currently holding a license to practice is not archived. All collections described below are
held by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives.
Kentucky State Board of
Examiners and Registration of Architects:
application files,
1930-1960
Summary: Records are arranged alphabetically by surname of
applicant and reflect the professional preparation and work
experience of the applicants. These files contain the
applications and supporting documentation of architects
registered in Kentucky. Many of the files are for persons who
applied in 1930, the year the board was founded. Each application
is accompanied by a photograph of the architect. Supporting
documentation may include scholastic transcripts, other
information on education and training, letters of recommendation,
and information on previous employment. In many cases, files also
include photographs showing examples of the applicant's work. In
addition to the initial application, files contain information
about subsequent renewals of registration. This series is made up
of the inactive (retired) files of the board. Files are retired
when registrations are not renewed. In most cases this occurs due
to the retirement or death of the architect.
Kentucky Board of Bar
Examiners: applications, 1922-1984
Summary: These records, arranged chronologically by date of
examination and then alphabetically by surname of applicant,
contain applications of persons desiring to take the Kentucky bar
examination, reports of the board's Character and Fitness
Committee on applicants' backgrounds, and results of past bar
examinations. Included in the applications are transcripts of
applicants' academic work, statements attesting to applicants'
moral fitness, and information on any prior legal experience.
Reports from the Character and Fitness Committee merely approve
or disapprove certain candidates by name, but do not detail
candidates' deficiencies at length. Also present are grade sheets
and official lists of results (1928-1940) and a small quantity of
application-related correspondence, concerned with the 1969 bar
examinations.

Chiropractic Examiners: 1920-1925

lists of active chiropractors and chiropractic schools.
Application forms include personal data on the applicant, as well
as information on what chiropractic system he planned to follow.
Also present are a list of active Kentucky chiropractors in 1922
and a list of schools specializing in chiropractic education.

are arranged by certificate number and include numbers 23 through
3292. Each folder contains an index card showing dates of license
renewal, any correspondence between the Board and the dentist in
question, and in later years test results from the dental exam.
Included with the test results are completed application forms
containing vital statistics, grade transcripts, and in some cases
photographs of candidates.
Kentucky State Board of
Medical Licensure: 1907-1969

medical examination, and related correspondence.

Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors:
1938-1966
Summary: These inactive master folders of registered Kentucky
engineers and land surveyors are arranged alphabetically by last
name of applicant and contain application forms, supporting
materials, and copies of Board letters to registrants. The
original application forms for registration contain the name,
address, date, and place of birth of the applicant, whether
he/she was a U.S. citizen and spoke English, and the length of
time the registrant had been a resident of Kentucky. Also
included are data concerning the registrants' academic
preparation, some official transcripts of schools or universities
attended, and evidence of professional experience in the field.
Many folders have carbon copies of letters from the Board to the
registrant, usually concerning pending examinations, and many
contain photographs of the registrant as well.
