Abbreviations Used in the Directory

St. for street, ab above, bw below, bn between, c corner, r residence, op opposite, r s right side, l s left side, * colored persons, E. East. W. West, N. North, S. South.

N.B. The following is the rule which the publisher of the Directory has observed in numbering the houses in the different streets in the city, viz: Main st. forms a common centre and starting point for all the streets crossing; and Upper st. is considered the meridian for all the streets branching from or crossing it and parallel with and including Main st.

Upper st. and all running parallel with it are divided into two parts, defined as North and South.

Main street and all running parallel with it and crossing Upper street, are also divided into two parts, known as East and West from upper. For example see the list of streets given above.

In every instance the odd numbers will be found on the left hand side and the even on the right from the place of beginning.

ADDITIONS AND ALTERATIONS,
STREETS, &c.

After the foregoing list of streets were printed we learned that the inhabitants of Main Cross street contemplated altering the name of that street to Broadway: and for that reason we have used both in the alphabetical list of inhabitants.

The proper name of Steam Mill st. is Bolivar st., and Ayres Alley is the name of the passage that runs from Gen. M'Calla's corner to E. High st.

ERRATA.

In the first form of the historical sketch of Lexington for "Mr. John Masterson" read Mr. James Masterson. And in the description of the malt floors of the Lexington Brewery, for "18 feet long," read 80 feet long.

In the List of streets, Combs' square is described as forming that part of N. Mulberry street "from No. 89 to 88." It should be from 80 to 88.
