Templin, Ruth Congleton
TEMPLIN,
Ruth Congleton, 92, of Lexington, died on Saturday January 17, 2004. She was a
retired schoolteacher, widow of Edwards M. Templin and mother of Thomas E.
Templin. Mrs. Templin was born in Estill County, Kentucky, and spent a rural
childhood there and in Spencer County. She was the daughter of George Washington
Congleton and Annie Wells Congleton and she had four brothers, all now deceased.
She graduated from Berea Academy in 1928 and from Berea College in 1932 as an
English major. At both institutions she was an honor student and basketball
player. She also obtained an M.A.degree in education from the University of
Kentucky in 1954. After graduating from college, she taught school in northern
Kentucky before marrying newspaperman Ed Templin of Lexington, where she spent
the rest of her life. She resumed teaching in the mid-1940’s and continued in
that profession until her retirement in 1973—in all, a 30-year career as a
teacher in Kentucky public schools. Locally, she taught many years at Jefferson
Davis Elementary School until it closed in 1972, then finished her career with a
one-year stint at Meadowthorpe Elementary School. She was an outstanding
teacher, devoted wife, mother, sister, and daughter and a person of integrity
and sincerity whose radiant smile beautifully expressed the sweetness of her
personality. She was a member of Hunter Presbyterian Church and besides her son,
she is survived by a nephew, William L. Congleton, Canoga Park, California, two
nieces, Ann Congleton, Brookline, Massachusetts and Caroll Parrish, St. Louis,
Missouri, and numerous cousins, including William T. Congleton, Lucia Gilchrist
and Louise Maxson, all of Lexington, and Robert Congleton, Versailles. Memorial
services will be 3 P.M.Friday at the W.R.Milward Mortuary-Southland conducted by
Rev. Gary Brooks, private burial will be Wednesday in the Lexington Cemetery and
friends may call 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the W.R.Milward Mortuary-Southland.
