George W. Rogers

George W. Rogers - eldest son of James Greenwood Rogers and Melvina Hatton Rogers.

George was killed while working a small coal mine for the Ira Profitt family at a locale commonly known as Chop Chesnut.

Several years ago I interviewed Herbert Profitt and he related the following story to me:

George Rogers was hired to open a mine for the Profitt family. Since it was some distance from his home to the Profitt homestead George often stayed overnight with the Profitt family instead of traveling back and forth each day.

Herbert's father, Ira Profitt, was the school teacher for the Rogers children and many other families in that area of rural Powell County.  One particular day the Rogers children were  very  concerned that their father had not come home the evening before. Ira Profitt also became concerned and sent someone to check on George's wellbeing.

George Rogers was found dead.  George died due to being crushed when the mine caved in on his body.

George is buried in a cemetery located at Chop Chesnut - Powell Co.

George was married to Lular James.

His family history is documented in the Rogers book by Ellen and Diane Rogers.

The grave marker and the photo attire seem to identify G.W. Rogers as a member of a fraternal organization. I believe he was a member of a Masonic Lodge in that area.
