REPORT

of the

ADJUTANT GENERAL

of the

STATE OF KENTUCKY

CONFEDERATE KENTUCKY VOLUNTEERS

WAR 1861-65



This company organized in October, 1861; commanded by Captain M. D. Wilcox;was stationed at Hopkinsville, and actively engaged in picketing and scouting for several months. On February 8th, was ordered to report to Col. N. B. Forrest, and served under him for a few weeks during the investment of Fort Donelson, participating in the various engagements occurring during the week, and on Sunday morning, February 16th, 1862, while endeavoring to escape, were cut off and forced to surrender, many men, however, effecting their escape. Those not captured went to Nashville, Tenn., and there were attached to Company "K," 1st Kentucky Cavary, commanded by Captain James K. Huey, and served with that company and regiment till their term of enlistment expired, which was for one year, when they were mustered out of service. The 1st Kentucky Cavary was then re-enlisted and reorganized to serve during the war. The members of this company who were captured at Fort Donelson, were exchanged at Vicksburg, Miss., in August, 1862, and were sent to Jackson, Miss., and put into camp, and about September 2d, 1862, were organized and attached to the 8th Kentucky Infantry. The officers elected by the company at this time were: Ben D. Terry, Captain; W. H. Green, First Lieutenant; F. P. Langston, Second Lieutenant; and Thomas B. Copeland, Third Lieutenant and W. J. Stone, First Sergeant. At the expiration of the year for which they had enlisted, several of the men were unwilling to serve in the infantry and declined to re-enlist, but most of them did re-enlist to serve during the war. Those who did not re-enlist are erroneously reported "Deserted," between October 15th and December 1st, 1862. (To be continued, as time permits. WPO)
