John J. LUCAS (Col.), born 1835 in Manchester, Clay, KY; died 11 Apr 1895; buried in Lucas cem, Manchester, Clay, KY He married on 10 Oct 1854 in Clay, KY Maria Brawner (Mariah) WILLIAMS, born 27 Jul 1837 in Manchester, Clay, KY; died 1868, daughter of Sidney M. WILLIAMS and Margaret Toulmin GARRARD.

Enlisted in the 16th US Infantry in 1847. 'Clay Co Pension Roll of 1883', lists John Lucas with an $7.50 monthly allowance due to injury to left hip.

'Dickey Diary', TT Garrard interview, 'John Lucas was first captain'. TT was talking about the 7th KY during the civil war.

'Report of the Adjutant General of the State of KY', Enlisted as a Captain 19 Aug 1861 at Camp Dick Robinson, KY, Co B, 7th Inf Regt, Resigned 24 Oct 1862. Muster roll of Daniel Garrard Williams, May 1863, shows that Daniel was appointed Captain because Jno. Lucas resigned.

Muster-in Roll 22 Sep 1861 shows John as a Company commander in the 3rd (later 7th) KY Inf. He has enrolled in Manchester 19 Aug 1861. They were mustered-in at Camp Dick Robinson in KY.

30 Apr 1862 muster roll shows him as Company commander of Co B. He became Provost Marshall 19 Apr 1862.

8 Dec 1862 listed as absent. John had tendered his resignation to Lt Col J.W. Ridgell 18 Oct 1862 at Portland, OH as commander of Co B due to injuries received from a horse falling on him. His resignation was accepted 24 Oct 1862.

23 Apr 1863 at Rocky Springs, MS, was appointed from a citizen to Lt Col. Lt Col J.W. Ridgell had resigned. Aug 1863 listed as absent on sick leave since 8 Aug 1863. John requested a 20 day sick leave to return to KY from Col Reuben May due to fever and asthma and his 'feeble condition'.

23 Jan 1864 at Baton Rouge, LA, John resigned as Lt Col due to 'the death of my partner in business and the long continued serious ill health of my family'. He was discharged 30 Jan 1864.

Muster-out roll 5 Oct 1864 at Louisville, KY.

VICKSBURG, MS, 1 May- 4 July 1863, the 7th KY, commanded by Lt Col John Lucas, was part of the 1st brigade commanded by Brig Gen Theophilus Toulmin Garrard, which was part of the 9th Division commanded by Brig Gen Peter Osterhaus, which was part of the 13th army corps commanded by Major Gen John A. McClernand, which was part of the Army of the TN, commanded by Major Gen Ulysses S. Grant.

In the 'Official Records' (OR), the report of Col James Keigwin of the 49th IN, commanding 1st brigade, dated 19 Jul 1863, states that 'Lt Col Lucas, of the 7th KY, was wounded by a shell from the enemy's guns on the morning of the 10th (July)'. In John's military records there is a 'casualty sheet' document describing this injury.
