Mrs. Henthorne Taken By Death
Was One of City's Most Prominent Women
Mrs. John Henthorne died at her home, 1311 Lexington avenue at eight o'clock last night after a long illness. She was the daughter of Benjamin and Prudence Griffith, and was born August 5, 1847, at Pine Grove, Ohio, but moved with her family to Buenta Vsita, Ky., where at the age of twenty, she was married to John Stewart Henthorne, a young soldier just mustered out of the Union army.
They lived for a short time in Ironton, Ohio and in Danville, Tennessee, but finally settled in Ashland, Ky., sixty years ago.
Mrs. Henthorne was of a quiet, retiring disposition, but a strong and forceful character. A faithful and consistent member of the Presbyterian Church, she devoted her life to the rearing of her family in loyalty to the Christian ideals.
For the last ten years she has been in delicate health, but the loving care of her devoted daughters and sons has filled her declin! ing days with comfort and joy.
She leaves to mourn for her three sons, Oscar, Calvin and Charlie, two daughters, Clara and Jessie, all of Ashland, four grandchildren Allen Wade Henthorne, of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. Jeremy Gardner of Charleston, W. Va.; Jay Geiger and Madge Katharine Henthorne, both of Ashland, and two great grandchildren, besides many more distant relatives and devoted friends and neighbors.
The funeral service will be held at the home Sunday afternoon at 3:30. The family request that no flowers be sent.
Note that Mrs. Henthorne's maiden name was Charity Ruth Griffith.
