Based on the info you provided on the relationships between the
Walter Welch and Wm Bellomy names, I was able to find the family of my
Martha F (Bellamy) Walters, the one who married the German immigrant Emanuel
Walters who joined the union side and died near the end of the civil war.
It turns out that William Bellamy was her father.  I found the family in the
1850 Greenup County census and there William was living with the Higgins
widow Sophia and two Higgins sons along with the Bellamy children including
our Martha F.  William and his family came from Cabel County WV and I found
the family there as far back as 1830.
Based on all of this I was able to apply to the State of West Virginia
(Emanuel Walters served in the 5th WV Infantry Regiment) for a Civil war
medal.  That's right - a medal  has been waiting for him (he died 1864) or
his descendants to claim since the 1860s.  My wife is a descendant of Martha
F and Emanuel Walters and so once we could show the connection she could claim the medal.
We have a photo of Emanuel Walters in his civil war uniform that is in good
shape and when we get the medal we will put in all in a frame for our
grandsons.  Makes quite a story.
So thanks again for all your hard work on Boyd county.
