The Passing of Pink

Last Friday the body of Pink Ann Finnell, which had been shipped here from Denver, was buried in the Finnell lot at Mt. Olive. Pink was the Indian woman who for years made her home in the Finnell family. She was 59 years old.

Connected with her death is an interesting story of pioneer days in which both the deceased Indian woman and Simp Finnell, Sr., figured. In 1860 the Finnell family emigrated to California. On the way this Indian child, then a girl of only five years, was sold to Simp Finnell by persons engaged in this nefarious traffic. The price paid for the child was $100, the little girl being turned over to the mother of the Finnell boys for protection. With the family she remained until she was taken to Denver last July on account of her health. Her education was not neglected enirely, for she learned to read and write fluently.

The elder Finnell made provision for her which extended beyond his death, for in his will was a clause which gave the Indian woman the use of an 80-acre farm during her life. this will also made the same provision for the colored woman, Alice, who was the companion of the Indian woman. Having tired of the farm it was sold to the Finnell heirs and the two went west to Colorado.
