The following biography of Elzepahn Weeden Sleet Hume comesfrom the soft
bound history of Hume 1873 - 1973, Compiled by The Hume Centennial History
Committee, Edgar County, Indiana.
FOUNDER OF VILLAGE
"Mr. E. W. S. Hume was born in Boone County, Kentucky in1817. He was
raised on a farm. Mr. Hume was married twice, first to Rachel W. Connelly in
1845, in the State of Kentucky; she died in 1863. He was married to Martha D.
Hume (widow of Weeden Hume, a cousin of E. W. S. Hume) in 1875; she was born
in Greensburg, Indiana in 1842. Mrs. Hume had a daughter (Olive) by her
previous marriage. Mr. Hume is the founder of the town which bears his name;
the railroad station and village were located on what was once a portion of
his farm."
"Mr. Hume was engaged in the grain business, held theoffice of Justice
of the Peace, the first Village President, and was the first appointed
Postmaster of Hume."
"Mr. Hume died in 1881 at the old Hume homestead which,several years
later, was bought by Mr. Fred Cash. He is buried at Edgar Cemetery."
"After the death of Mr. Hume, Martha and Olive went toCalifornia to
reside. She, however, made several visits to the old home, the last being at
the time of the Homecoming event in Hume, 1914. Mrs. Hume died in 1922, at
the age of eighty-one; she is buried at Edgar Cemetery."
"The daughter Olive married J. W. Oliver of Pittsburg,Pa., she had a son
William Hume Oliver, and a daughter Martha Julie Oliver."

County, Kentucky Census, District 2, Enumerated 22 Jul 1850, Page 285,

The entries for E. A. Hume and Thomas Connelly was identifiedfor me by
Roger Connelly. E. A. Hume was Eupha A. Hume, daughter of George W. Hume. My
infomration has George W. Hume a son of Elzephan Hume, uncle of Lewis Hume
and brother of Rev. George Hume. Thomas Connelly was a brother of Rachel W.&
Pauline B. Connelly. Pauline married to Geroge W. Hume. (More on Elzephan and
his family later)

This information cannot be confirmed by me at this time. Thisinformation
is from Hume Family History by Dr. John Robert Hume, 1903. He statesthat
Mary and Thomas Miner had one son George Miner who lived in St. Louis,
Missouri. Mary and Vincent Galin/Galins had one daughter Ida Galins who
married an unknown Young and lives in Quincy, Adams, Illinois.

Opal Harcourt wrote that Benjamin Machlan's father John Machlan, Jr. was
born in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania in May of 1795. He died in Rush County,
Indiana in 1857. He married in Butler County, Ohio in 1818 to Sally Day.
Sally born 1799 and she died in 1846 in Rush County, Indiana.
Benjamin Machlan's grandfather John Machland was born in 1763 in
Scotland. He died in Rush county, Indiana. He married Hester Updegrafte.
After Louisa J., wife of Benjamin died, he later married Louisa J's
younger sister Susan Hume Bowles/Boes who was also widowed by this time. I
was unable to locate a Maniteau, Ca but found a Manteca.
Margaret Machlan Hilligoss residing in Maniteau, California. Her only son
Raymond died by the time Dr. Humes book was compiled & published. I have not
confirmed this info.
George W. Machlan was purported to be a planter in Aberdeen, Monroe,
Mississippi. I have not confirmed this.
