Waterways
In the early days, most land owners were identified by the waterway or creek they lived along. A source of clean flowing water was essential to sustain not only the settlers but their livestock.
We can think of the waterway system in Bath County as a tree, with the Licking River being the trunk. The larger creeks, that is the ones that emptied directly into the Licking River, were Beaver Creek (now in Menifee Co.), Brackens Branch, Caney Creek, Clover Creek, Indian Creek, Little Indian Creek, Little Slate Creek, Salt Lick Creek, and Slate Creek.
Many other smaller creeks emptied into these larger creeks across the county. The Maps page is a good resource for locating the smaller tributaries.
