The earliest post offices in Bath County were located in small villages along unimproved roads and trails of the day. The post master was usually a store keeper, mill operator, ferry operator, or long time resident. Some of those early post offices may be difficult to locate, since a detailed map of Bath County wasn't produced until 1884.

After the railroad was built through Bath County in 1882, additional stations and stops sprang up to supply the locomotives with water, wood, and later coal. Post offices were located at these stops; Preston (Puck), Olympia, and Salt Lick.

The first post office in Bath County was established at Olympian Springs in 1811. It was discontinued when a post office opened in Olympia in 1882.

Sometimes a post office went by a different name than the railroad stop. Preston in Bath County is an example. The Elizabethtown, Lexington & Big Sandy RR called this stop Preston after a local landowner William Preston, who donated land for the railroad's right of way. The post office, however, was located in Crooks' store, when it was established in 1882, and was officially the Crooks P.O. until 1913, when it was renamed Preston P.O.

Olympia was also located on the Elizabethtown, Lexington & Big Sandy RR about 3 1/2 miles east of Preston. According to Kentucky Place Names by University Press of Kentucky, the post office was first established as Puck in 1881, with Thomas J. Eubank as the post master. However, the following year it was renamed Olympia after the Olympian Springs resort 2 1/2 miles south of this R.R. stop.

While rural delivery was established for some post offices in Bath County in 1903-1904, many residents found it necessary to continue going to their local post office to get their mail until much later.
