William Carr Turner

Submitted by Sandi Gorin. She notes:
"I have no connection, no further information and am not seeking additional information."

Mr. Turner was born and reared in Cumberland County near Marrowbone, and was a second son of William Larker Turner.

As a young man he came to Glasgow and attended the old Glasgow Normal School, having graduated in the Class of 1887. In 1888 he taught school at Vernon School in this County. Following that he taught at Glasgow Junction a number of years and then at Cave City a number of years. In 1902 he was elected Superintendent of the Barren County Schools, held that office for three terms and retired from it in 1914. He was again principal of the Cave City Schools during the terms of 1917-1918.

Later in 1918 he and Mrs. Turner took charge of the express agency here and operated it until Mr. Turner was forced to retire, the first day of this month on account of his advanced years.

He had been a Mason for over 40 years and Knight Templar for many years. During that time he held many offices in the Allen Lodge, including Master, High Priest of the Royal Arch and Commander. For many years he has been a very active member of the local chapter of the Knights of Pythias.

At the time of his death he was an Elder in the First Christian Church having held that office
for many years. In his Christian and fraternal life, he was a confirmed believer in the philosophy of his fraternal teachings of the Church, and practiced those teachings in every way possible in his relations with people with whom he came in contact.

His kindness to all and his unselfish attitude toward others have won him hosts of devoted friends throughout Barren and surrounding counties. His activities in his church, his lodge and his public life were given for the good of the public. Besides his material help his wise counsel was freely given to all who sought it. In politics he was a lifelong Democrat, having taken a prominent part in many political campaigns in the interest of those whom he considered qualified applicants for public office. In spite of his deep interest in his party; he was one not to let this interfere with personal friendship. He was never defeated for any office for which he asked the people and returned their favor with honest and efficient service.

Besides Mrs. Turner, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J. B. Norman of San Antonio, Texas, one son, W. K. Turner of Louisville, and three grandchildren.  Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. G. J. Fudge of Marrowbone, and seven brothers, George P. Turner, of Glasgow, Jerry Turner, Cumberland County, Larkin Turner, Corydon, Chesterfield Turner, Shawnee, Oklahoma, Bedford Turner of Owensboro, Dr. E. D. Turner, Cave City and Louis R. Turner of Cave City.

Funeral services are to be conducted at the First Christian Church by the Rev. T. H. Alderson, Sunday afternoon at four o'clock. Burial services will be conducted by the Masons with a
Knights Templar escort at the Glasgow Cemetery.
