The entire community was shocked and grieved Sunday when the sad news was announced that Mr. U.
G. McFarland, 72, had died at his home on the Edmonton road, two miles northeast of Glasgow. His
death was caused by injuries suffered on October 17, when he fell on a pitchfork in a barn loft at his
farm. Since that time his condition has shown little improvement and he was treated at the Samson
Community Hospital a number of times.
With the passing of Mr. McFarland, Barren county has lost one of its most prominent and influential
citizens - one who retained a foremost place in the hearts of his friends. A son of the late Young and
Mary McFarland, he as born in Fentress county, Tenn., and later moved to Cumberland county.
Mr. McFarland and his family moved from Cumberland county to Glasgow 43 years ago. For thirty-five
years he was connected with the Federal Internal Revenue Department and assisted in the capture of
numerous moonshine stills throughout the state. Mr. McFarland retired as a revenue agent six years ago
and since that time has engaged in farming at his farm near Glasgow.
While connected with the Revenue Department he was known for his bravery and loyalty and his
sincerity of purpose to the duties to which he was called. Mr.
McFarland was a member of the Baptist church. He was staunch Republican and voted the ticket for 51
consecutive years.
Mr. McFarland had many fine traits; he was straight, honest and trustworthy; he was kindly, charitable,
considerate of others; he was as firm and solid as Gibraltar, and wise and able was his counsel. We could
write a volume about his goodness of heart and nobleness of character, yet leave a volume untold.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ida Spears McFarland and the following children:
Mrs Leo Page, Messrs Stanley, Ed and Herbert McFarland, all of Glasgow; Mrs.
Forrest Mercer, Lexington; Mrs. C. J. Purdy, Louisville, and Mr. Paul McFarland, Amherstdale W. Va.; two
sisters, Mrs. Mary Hughes of Madison, Tenn., and Mrs. Melvin Dulworth, Peytonsburg, Ky. Several
grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held Monday, 3 p.m. at the McFarland home, the Rev. Sam Ed Bradley in charge.
Burial was in the Glasgow cemetery. Messrs Henry McFarland, Edwin Page, B. G. Page, Leon Page,
grandsons, and Billy B Jones and J. C. Downing acted as pallbearers."
