Mr. William A. Matthews, 73, well known Barren county farmer, died at his home in the Oleoak section
Wednesday afternoon of last week around 5:40 o'clock following a paralytic stroke on Monday. He had
been in ill health several months.
Mr. Matthews was born and reared in the Oleoak section and engaged in farming all his life. He was a
man of high standing in his community, plain spoken, a man of his word, and a citizen that will be missed
by friends and neighbors. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at the New Bethel Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Ernest
Dixon in charge. Burial was in the Groce cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bedie Matthews; six daughters, Mrs. Charles Piercy and Mrs. Lee T. Rising,
Glasgow, R. 4; Mrs. Harry D. Button, Glasgow; Mrs. Ralph Steenbergen, Glasgow, R 5; Mrs. Oma Shugart,
Glasgow, R. 5; and Mrs. Leon Spencer, Glasgow; one son, Mr. Andrew Matthews, at home; one sister,
Mrs. Ed Wells, Glasgow, R. 4; two brothers, Messrs Ed Matthews of California and Don Matthews,
Glasgow, R. 4."
