Name: Bess Howard

Died: 16 Apr 1965, residence, age 84
First woman in Barren Co to be a candidate for public office and served for 32 years as Barren County Clerk before her retirement. In 1924 and 1932 she was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and led the way for more women to become active in politics. She was a Sunday School teacher at First Christian Church for 65 years. She was the first woman elder of her church, was past District Secretary of the Christian’s Women Fellowship. In 1954 she received a Citation from Transylvania College for outstanding achievements in the field of Lay Churchmanship and in 1957 was the recipient of a citation in behalf of the church women of Kentucky for the cause of Christ around the world. She was a charter member of the Barren County Historical Society and a member of the Edmond Rogers Chapter of the DAR for over 50 years. She always recognized the needs of the less fortunate and personally saw that their needs were fulfilled.
