James H. BYBEE 31 Dec 1861 - 25 Dec 1940

"The death of Mr. James H. Bybee, Barren county jailer, on Christmas day, removed from Barren county, one of its most highly respected citizens. His death was caused by complications and infirmities due to old age. He would have been 79 years of age on Dec. 31st.

"Mr. Bybee was one of the most prominent and best known citizens in Barren county, and was perhaps known to more peoople than any one in the county of the present generation. Bigger hearted or more accomodating man never lived than Mr. Bybee and he commanded the respect and admiration of all who knew him. He had been active in the civic enterprises of this county for years and was a desvout member of the Baptist church.

"He was born in Barren county near Cave City, Dec. 31, 1861, and had resided in the county all his life except for two years spent in Missouri in his early youth. He operated saw mills in his active years in various sections of southern Kentucky and engaged in farming practically all his life. He was an extensive land owner and is said to have probably had more titles to Barren county land during his lifetijme than any other resident in the county. Throughout his life he had been an honorable and industriious citizen and the county suffers a distinct loss in his passing.

"Mr. Bybee was an ardent Democrat and was always found on the firing line upholding the principles of his party. He was elected Barren county Jailer in 1933 and was re-elected by a popular vote in 1937. His present term would have expired next year and he would have no doubt been an outstanding candidate for a third term, if he so desired. He married Miss Mary E. Pace, Sept. 15, 1882, who preceded him to the grave four years ago.

"Surviving are two sons, Messrs Joe P. Bybee and J. E. (Doc) Bybee; two daughters, Mrs. Annie Parker and Mrs. John (Mary) Pedigo, all of Glasgow. Three children preceded him in death. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren also mourn the passing of this beloved citizen.

"Funeral services were held at the residence Thursday, Dec. 26 at 2:30 p.m., the Revs. T. F. Grider and J. A. Gaines in charge. The remains were interred in the Bybee lot in the Cave City Cemetery.

"All county offices were closed during the funeral and burial services of this beloved county official. The pallbearers were Messrs E. R. Settle, Marchel Bishop, Rufus Burgess, Brents Dickinson, Jr., H. C. Adwell and W. E. Jones."
