Francis Scott Revolutionary War Pension

FRANCIS SCOTT, aged 60 years, now a citizen of Barren Co., Kentucky, states and declares on oath; that he served in the American Revolutionary War as a soldier about three years. He enlisted about the year 1777 or 1778 (to the best of his recollection) in Captain WALLACE's Company, Colonel HEATH's Regiment and General CHARLES SCOTT's Brigade, in the Continental Line. He at first entered the service for 18 months but before the expiration of that time he again enlisted to serve during the war and was finally discharged about the year 1781 in Frederick Co., Va. after having been marched thither with the prisoners taken with Lt. CORNWALLIS at Yorktown. The written discharge which he then obtained has sinc been lost or destroyed and cannot now be produced. The said FRANCIS SCOTT further states and declares that from this reduced circunstances he need the assistance of his country for support.

I, CHRISTOPHER TOMPKINS, a Circuit Judge for the State aforesaid and presiding Judge of the Barren County Circuit Court do certify that FRANCIS SCOTT, whose name is subscribed to the foregoing statement, this day personally appeared before me and made oath that the fact and allegations above set forth are true. I, CHRISTOPHER TOMPKINS, Circuit Judge as aforesaid, do further certify that FRANCIS SCOTT lives in Barren County within a few miles fo my place of residence, but I have no knowledge of his circumstances other than what I have derived from his neighbors and acquaintences, from which and his appearance eing that of a poor, hardworking man, I believe him to be in needy circumstances and indeed in poverty. Of his service in the Revolutionary War I have no knowledge. Given under my hand, this 16th July 1818.

STATE OF KENTUCKY
BARREN CIRCUIT, SCT.
On the 16th day of October, 1820, personally appeared in open court, to wit; in the Barren County Court, being a court of record for the said County of Barren, and made such by an Act of the Assembly of the said State, entitled an Act to reduce into one the several Acts, establishing county courts and regulating the proceedings therein and concerning the appointment of Justices of the Peace and their jurisdiction, approved Dec. 17, 1896 (sic). FRANCIS SCOTT, aged 62 years, resident in the said county of Barren, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War, as follows: He enlisted in the Spring of the year 1779 in Capt. WALLACE's Company, Col. HEATH's regiment, and Gen. CHARLES SCOTT's Brigade in he Continental Line, he at first enlisted for 18 months but before that time expired he enlisted to serve during the War. For further particulars, he refers to his original application for a pension sworn to before the honorable CHRISTOPHER TOMPKINS on the 15th July 1818 and the additional certificate of said TOMPKINS, dated February 3, 1820, and I do also swear that I was a resident citizen of the U.S. on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale, or in any manner, disposed of my property or many part thereof, with intent thereby so to diminsh it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress, entitled an Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the U.S. in the Revolutionary War, passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities, contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed, that is to say; one horse colt, a stray, one cow and calf, two sows and shoats, one pot and skillett, dresser furniture including knives plates, forks, cups, etc, three wheels and loom. My occupation is that of a farmer, but am unable to support myself and family by my labour. My family consiss of my wife, MARGARET SCOTT, aged about 55 years, my daughter FRANCES SCOTT, aged 23, my son JAMES SCOTT, aged 13, subscribed, sworn to and declared in open court, this 16th day of Ocotober 1820.

I, WILLIAM LOGAN, Clerk of the Barren County Court, do hereby certify taht the foregoing affidavit and schedule thereto annexed are truly copied form the records of said court and I do further certify that it is the opinion of siad court after hearing credible testimony that the amount of the property in said schedule is worth $46.00. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand an affixed the seal of the said court this 16th day of October 1820.

(In red ink) Found on Va. Roll Schedule $46.00. Applicant aged 62 years, wife 55, daughter 25, and son 13 years old. Served 3 years. Admitted:
I do certify that I am acquainted with FRANCIS SCOTT of Barren Co., Ky. a Pensioner, whose certificate bears date the 11th day of July 1821; that his certificate was enclosed to me from Glasgow, Ky. in a letter from WILLIAM G. LOGAN, bearing date from the 17th march, 1832, with a request that I would deposit the said pension certificate, which is nearly worn out, in the pension office and obtain a duplicate thereof; that said WILLIAM G. LOGAN is man of unimpeachable character and having implicit confidence in his integrity, I have no doubt that the certificate was forwarded to me for the purpose aforesaid at the request of the said FRANCIS SCOTT, himself. Given under my hand this 30th March 1832. /s/ CHRISTOPHER TOMPKINS

KENTUCKY, SCT.
THOMAS JAMES, aged 47 years, this day appeared before me, CHRISTOPHER TOMPKINS, Judge of the Barren County Court and made oath; that he lived about two miles from FRANCIS SCOTT in Va., at the time he (SCOTT) went into the army of the Revolution; that he (JAMES) was at that time a small boy, but well recollects the said SCOTT's going into the service and taht he was absent several years. /s/ THOMAS JAMES
