Barren
County, the thirty-seventh in order of
formation, lies in south-central Kentucky, midway between
Louisville, KY, and Nashville, TN, and covers an area of
491 square miles. It is bordered by Allen , Edmonson, Hart, Metcalfe, Monroe, and Warren Counties. |
Created on December 20, 1798, from parts
of Warren and Green counties, it was named for the
barrens, the meadowlands that covers the northern third.
70% of the original settlers came from Virginia; 80% of
them were English, Scottish, Welsh, or Irish.
The
county seat was named Glasgow which was named for
Glasgow, Virginia in Amherst County where many of the
early settlers came from, and to honor the early Scottish
settlers. Some of the first explorers were the Long
Hunters led by Henry Skaggs. The population of Barren
County was 38,749 in 2002.

1876 | Liberty Female College opened. |
1881 | Glasgow Waterworks built |
1895 | George J. Ellis Drugstore opened on corner of Green and Washington St, Glasgow. |
1896 | Fifth Barren Co Courthouse built. |
1898 | Barren Co Centennial |
1900 | Fire destroys east side of square. |
1906 | Fire wipes out Green Street |
1906 | Citizens Bank & Trust Co. organized |
1906 | U.S. Vice-President Charles Fairbanks visits Glasgow |
1907 | Automobile of Glasgow resident Seigle Lewis, on the streets |

1919 | Glasgow's 1st football team organzed, 0-3 for season. |
1920 | Peoples Bank of Cave City robbed by Tom Slaughter 6 Apr. |
1926 | Glasgow's first auto race held. |
1929 | T. J. Samson Hospital dedicated. |
1932 | Trigg National Bank closes due to economy, run on other banks. |
1936 | Glasgow airport dedicated |
1937 | Kentucky Pants Co established. |
1941 | Glasgow National Guard activated in Jan - among earliest to see action in WW II - Africa, Italy, France and Germany. 73 men lost. |
1942 | Glasgow High School's football team went undefeated. |

1943 | Fire destroys Clayton Pedigo and Ely Drugs on east square. |
1946 | Glasgow's first radio station opened, WKAY. |
1948 | Glasgow celebrated 150th birthday, big homecoming. |
