In the name of God Amen , I Thomas Gaines being of sound mind but feeble in body do make this my last will and testament as follows viz: First I give and bequeath to my beloved son Keeling C Gaines my farm all the land belong to to situate and lying in the county of Anderson and State of Ky- 2nd I give and bequeath to my beloved daughters Harriett Haley, Lucy J Jordan, Rachel Tinsley , Elizabeth Armstrong and my grandson J Keeling Gaines son of Edmond P Gaines all the rest of my property , negroes, horses, cattle, and household furniture , the above at my death to be equally divided between those named in this 2nd clause of my will . I further desire if it can be done satisfactory to   to all parties than none of the above property be exposed to public sale , but the same to be parceled out  out equally between the parties I this cannot be done agreeably to all parties the perishable part of the above property may be sold at public sale to the highest bidder except the negroes , which are not be to be sold but kept in the family of my children - I hereunto set my hand && seal in the presence of these witnesses - this 11th day of August in the year of our Lord 1852

I Edward Lane of Anderson County and state of Kentucky being in health mind and memory, but knowing the mortality and uncertainty of human life, do in order to dispose of my worldly estate, make and ordain this my last will & testament

It is my desire that my Body be buried in decent Christian Burial at the discretion of my executor.

Item 2 – It is my will and desire that my tract of land on which I now reside containing by estimates about one hundred and eighty nine acres, be divided into three equal parts, according to quantity and quality, in the following manner to wit one third part thereof to my grandchildren, the heirs of my son Garland Lane Deceased viz: Lucinda, Permelia, Louisa, Rhoda, and Betsey together with the following negroes viz: Aga, Stephen, Prissa, and Ned together with their increase, to them and to their heirs forever, and that their mother Betsey Lane, the wife and now the widow of my said son Garland deceased, be permitted to reside on the said one third part of said land, this willed to to my said grandchildren as above expressed during her widowhood and also to enjoy the benefit of said negroes as long as my said grandchildren shall remain with her or until they become of lawful age.

Item 3 – It is my will that one third part of said tract of land given unto my son Felix Lane, to him and to his heirs forever together with the following negroes viz: Jude, Visa, Alpha, and Milla, together with all their increase to him and to his heirs forever.

Item 4- I will unto the heirs of my son Hayston Lane, the remaining one third of said tract of land together with the following negroes viz: Philis, Betsey, and Rachael, and all their increase to them & to their heirs forever, and that my said son Hayston be permitted to reside on the said land thus bequeathed unto his heirs aforesaid during his life and that he be permitted to enjoy the benefits of said negroes thus willed to his heirs during his life for the support of himself and family only.

Item 5- I give and bequeath unto my daughter Nancy Stansberry to her and to her heirs forever my young negroe man Paddy or instead of said negroe four hundred dollars in gold or silver

Item 6 – I give unto my daughter Alpha Watts and her heirs forever one negroe named Tama and one named Lydia and their increase forever.

Item 7 – In addition to the negroes formerly given unto my daughter Alpha Watts I give to her and her children forever the following negroes viz: Fanny and the two now in her possession and Mary and the increase of the said females forever

Item 8 – I will that the residue of my estate, after the payment of my just debts, be equally divided amongst all my children viz: to the heirs of my son Garland Lane, to Felix Lane, Lucinda Watts, Nancy Stansberry , Alpha Watts, and to the heirs of my son Hayston Watts, to them and to their heirs forever.

Item 10 - I nominate and appoint my son Felix Lane and Elijah Thurman as executors to this my last will and Testament revoking all others heretofore made, to carry the same into effect

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 23rd day of May 1830

I Nelson C Johnson , Clerk of the County Court for the county aforesaid do certify that at a county court held for said county on Monday the 14th day of March 1831 this last will and testament of Edward Lane Deceased was produced in open court and proven by the oaths of Jordan Walker, Elijah Thurman and Hastings Lane, the subscribing   witnesses thereto and was ordered to be recorded whereupon the will hath been duly admitted to record in my office .
