Allen County, Ky. 17 Sept. 1832 in open court, JOHN GATEWOOD, deposes: now in 72 year. Lived in Amherst County, Va., during the Revolutionaly War. In Feb. 1778 or 1779 was drafted and served under Captain JOHN CHRISTIAN. Did not serve out my full term. My father, hearing I was sick, came down and released me. I presume it was by furlough. In January 1781 substituted for THOMAS POWEL and served under Captain WM. TUCKER. In May 1781 was drafted and served under Captain JAMES PAMPHLET. In Sept. 1781 volunteered and served under Captain JOHN STEWART and was at the Seige of York.

"Thinking my discharges would be of no service to me I sold them all or part of them to MOSES HIGGINBOTHAM for wool hats."

PEYTON WELSH and ZADOCK B. THACKSON(?) clergyman and SAMUEL E. CARPENTER testify to age and character of JOHN GATEWOOD.

Allen County, Ky. 18 May 1833. JOHN GATEWOOD deposes: As best he can recollect he served a total of one year one month and 19 days. That he was born either in Culpepper or Spotsylvania County, Virginia. He can not say which on 10 July 1761.

Allen County, Ky. 16 Aug. 1839. Mrs. NANCY GATEWOOD deposes: Age 74. That she was married to JOHN GATEWOOD 22 August 1782. That he died 6 Oct. 1835.

Sworn before SAMUEL E. CARPENTER, JP who said there was exhibited to him a Bible of great age in which has been kept the family record of JOHN GATEWOOD and from which he abstracts the following: (A corner of the leaf being torn off the names are not entirely extinct.)

Was born July 10, 1761
Was born Feb. 5, 1765
Gatewood was borned Dec. 21,1783.

And I have taken the statement on oath of FLETCHER GATEWOOD and PETER FISHBOURN who say that JOHN GATEWOOD preceded the first entry and NANCY GATEWOOD preceded the second entry and DOTIA that of the third. There is also entered the said Bible: JOHN and ANN GATEWOOD were married Aug. 22, 1782, and the said FLETCHER GATEWOOD further saith on oath that is mother, the said NANCY or ANN GATEWOOD was and now is the indifferently called NANCY and ANN.

PETER FISHBOURN and Wm. HATLER swera to having known JOHN and NANCY GATEWOOD many years, and that they were reputed to be man and wife and they knew their eldest child DOTIA who by appearance would be of age corresonding to the entry in the Bible.

The leaf from the GATWOOD Bible. (It appears very old, is faded, rather torn, and badly defaced, as thought a child perhaps had written all over it, but one can makeout, in addition to what has been given):
