Indenture
of Apprenticeship
The
Commonwealth of Kentucky
This Indenture made this _10th_ day of ___June_ one
thousand eight hundred and ___seventy-five__ between __WILLIAM E. MOTLEY
a free boy of color by J.H. Collins,
Clerk of the county court of Allen County, in the State of Kentucky, of one
part, and ____JOHN LANDERS_of the other part;
Whereas, by an act of the General Assembly, the Judge of said
Court is empowered to bind out orphans and poor children, whoch
parents are incapable of bringing them up in moral courses,
therefore the Court made the following order, to-wit:
On motion & by the
request of JOHN LANDERS it is ordered that WILLIAM E. MOTLEY a free boy of
color who is now 12 years old be bound as an apprentice to said JOHN LANDERS who
is a suitable person until he arrives to the age of 21 years to be taught the
art and business of Farming and that the clerk of this court prepare and enter
unto suitable indenture with said WILLIAM E. MOTLEY in behalf of said boy W.E. MOTLEY
conditioned according to law
Now, therefore, this Indenture Witnesseth, that the said J.H. Collins,
clerk of said Court, as above recited, hath put, place and bound, and by these
presents, doth put, place and bind the said ___W.E. Motley__ apprentice
to and under the said __John Landers___ with _him_ to dwell, and
_him_ to serve, in the condition, duty, and character of an apprentice,
until the said __Wm E. Motley_shall arrive at the age of ___Twenty
one___ years, fully to be completed and ended--- that, during all the said
period, the said ___W.E. Motley____shall faithfully serve the said
__John Landers__ master, in all lawful business, according to the best
of _his__ wit and ability, and in all things honestly, orderly and obediently
demean and behave __himself__; and the said ___John Landers___ doth for __himself__ heirs, executors,
and administrators, covenant and agree with the said ___W.E. Motley__
that he, the said __John Landers___ will teach the said __W.E. Motley__
the trade, art, and business of __Farming_ and will find, provide for,
and allow to the said ___W.E. Motley_
sufficient diet, wearing apparel, washing, lodging, proper medical
attention, and all other things usually allowed to apprentices by good and just
masters, and will treat _him_
with humanity --- that he the said __John Landers_will __at the end of the apprenticeship of said
boy W.E. Motley to give him a new, good,
suit of clothing suitable for the season and pay him one hundred dollars;
Provided however if the said Landers shall teach said boy to read and write
then he shall not be bound to pay him the said one hundred dollars
