ALEXANDER, James R. & Dorcas Maryland W 2901

Allen County, Ky. 14 May, 1833, before Judge Circuit court, JAMES R. ALEXANDER aged 76 deposes: I was born in the state of Pennsylvania and was living in Cecil County, Maryland when called into service. Has since lived in Muhlenberg Co., NC and Allen (late Warren County), and in 1776 was student in Nassau College, NJ. On August 1, 1776 enlisted as private in the company of Capt. WALTER ALEXANDER in the "Maryland Flying Camp". Was immediately appointed sergeant for his company. Discharged about Dec. 1, 1776 and commenced the study of medicine; he returned to his father's in NC. In May 1780 volunteered as a surgeon to care for those who had survived the taking of Charleston SC and the Massacre of Col. Buford's Va. Regt. by Tarlton. Continued in the service till Oct. 15, 1780 and then he was appointed surgeon to a regiment of militia raised in Muhlenberg Co., NC, commanded by Col . Wm. L.Hudson, Dandson. Served till about Feb. or March of 1781

Refers to MARK GAMSON (or Garrison), JOHN SALON, EDMUND WAGGONER who can testify as to his character and veracity. PEYTON WELSH, a clergymen, and WILLIS MITCHELL testify as neighborhood witnesses. ASHER W. GRAHAM, Judge of Allen Circuit Court.

May 9, 1839, before Wm. FOSTER, Justice of the Peace for Allen Co., DORCAS ALEXANDER aged 72 deposes: she is widow of JAMES R. ALEXANDER, and she married him 26, Nov. 1789, in McLinburgh County, NC and he died 11 March 1836.

May 9, 1830(1839?) in Allen County. MAY S. ALEXANDER, DORCAS REICE (?) ALEXANDER, JOHN G. ALEXANDER, and JOSEPH T. WILSON swore under oath to knowing said DORCAS ALEXANDER to be the widow of JOHN ALEXANDER, and they now have before them a family Bible Record of the marriage which took place 26, Nov. 1789. Sworn before WILLIAM FOSTER, J.P.

On 1 Sept. 1848 in Allen Co., DORCAS ALEXANDER aged 82 makes an affidavit before A.C. ALEXANDER, Justice of the Peace.

Parke Co., Ind., 20 May 1839, MARK GARRISON swerar an oath: That JAMES R. ALEXANDER of Allen Co, Ky., who was an acting surgeon in the army of the USA was married to DORCAS GARRISON in York County, SC in 1789 and that he died in Allen County Ky. in 1836. Sworn before ROBERT M. GILKESON, J.P.

On 5 June, 1856, MARK ALEXANDER son and heir of JAMES and DORCAS ALEXANDER, deceased, does in his own right and in the name of SILAS, CHARLES, G., MARY S., ABIGAIL B., JAMES R., JOHN G., and DORCAS R. ALEXANDER who are the only surviving children of the said JAMES and DORCAS ALEXANDER appoint JAMES G. AUSTIN, Edq. of Washington City their lawful attorney.

Meeklenburg County, NC. On 22 March 1834, WILLIAM ALEXANDER swears to personal knowledge of the services of Dr. JAMES R. ALEXANDER, 1st of said county of Mecklenburg and now as he believe of Allen County.

Meeklenburg County, NC . On 22 March 1834 ROBERT ROBISON swears he was intimately acquainted with Dr. JAMES R. ALEXANDER and of his own personal knowledge declares he served as a sergeant in the hospital in Waxsaw and also in Charlotte, perhapes in1780.

On May 10, 1834, JAMES R. ALEXANDER writes to Mr. LEWIS CASS, Sec'y of War, Washington: ------I wrote to two of my good brothers in Meeklenburg County, NC one of them I know, if living could testify to my services, the other was too young to remember my services. The letter to my two brothers being directed to my eldest, my third and young brohter informs me, was not taken out of the post office, he being dead to whom it was directed----- Enclosed I sent your deposition of Capt. WM. ALEXANDER and ROBERT ROBISON. (Note: It is not clear that this Captain Wm. Alexander is a relative) Truth to me is, sir, very precious; I would not forfeit my character as a man of truth for all the pensions in the world; what would it profit me to gaint the whole world; if gained by falsehood, and lose my own soul? (Note: He is in his 78th year when he writes this letter and he writes clear and legible in his own hand)
