Obituary: Carroll, Cortney - Monday, October 19, 1936 Beattyville Enterprise - Oct. 22, 1936 Submitted by: Carole Bays ********************************************************************** CORTNEY CARROLL FOUND DEAD SUNDAY Beattyville, October 19 - Coroner's inquest was completed at 10 o'clock this morning in the case of Cortney Carroll, 24, whose body was found early Sunday morning lying in a ditch on Grand avenue about 50 feet from the railroad crossing near the depot. He was lying on his face in the ditch when first seen by Billy Louden and Clarence Begley, small boys living in that end of town. Carroll was last seen, according to statements at the inquest held by County Judge Green Kilburn about 9 o'clock Saturday night by City Marshall Virgil Smith. Smith said Carroll was under the influence of liquor and that he warned him to get out of town. The last glimpse he had of him was about the railroad crossing. There was only a small cut behind the left ear which, according to the physician making the examination, was not the primary cause of death. Leaving town late in the afternoon, Carroll abandoned his car at the store of Tommy Shoemaker on the Zachariah road, and came back to town with Bill Bush and Dorsie Cable. The inquest was started about 9 o'clock Sunday morning and was continued over until this morning. The jury composed of Wm. Freeman, Algin Carter, H.P. Begley, Jesse Greer, Elmer Treadway, and Walden Hensley, returned this verdict. We the jury agree that the deceased Cortney Carroll came to his death by falling into a ditch causing a cut behind his ear - or by heart attack - or if any other cause it be unknown to us. This Oct. 19, 1936, H.P. Begley, one of the jury. He was the son of Nelson and Dora E. Spencer Carroll. The body will be taken to Wolfe County for burial. ******************************************************************** These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
