Obits: Booth, Harold Glenn , died 09/1952 Oct. 2002 Wolfe County, KY Submitted by: http://www.rootsweb.com/~archreg/vols/00001.html#0000062 Wolfe County Genealogy and Carole Bays ************************************************************************ Wolfe County News - Sept. 24, 1952 WOLFE COUNTY YOUTH DROWNED, TWO SERIOUISLY INJURED IN POWELL ACCIDENT Lombard, Ky - An eighteen year old Wolfe County boy was drowned and his two teen age companions narrowly escaped death or serious injury early Sunday morning when the car in which they were riding left the highway about one-half mile west of here, and overturned into Middle Fork creek, hurling two of the boys out and pinning the other one inside the car, that landed on it's side in about six feet of water, just above the concrete bridge spanning the creek. The accident occurred about one a.m. Sunday morning as the boys were returning to their homes at Campton. The car in which they were riding was reported owned and operated by Raleigh Brewer, about 19, who suffered a dislocated hip, a fracture of the left ankle, and numerous body bruises. Riding with Brewer were: Gene Tolson, 18, who was thrown from the car a distance of more than one hundred feet from where the car overturned before landing in the creek. He suffered a sprained back and body cuts and bruises. Both were taken to the Good Samaritan hospital in Lexington after receiving first aid treatment in Winchester at the Clark County hospital. Victim Names The drowning victim was Harold Glenn Booth, who whould habe been 18 years old Tuesday (yesterday the day of the funeral services were conducted) He was thrown from the car as it overturned into the creek, and landed in about six feet of water, between where the car stopped and the bank. HIs body was recovered from the water about 6:30 a.m. by Powell County Sheriff James Crowe and Ray E. Knox, Stanton wrecker operator who also removed the car from the creek and took it to his establishmen at Stanton. Coroner's Invetigation An ambulance from the Craft funeral home in Whitesburg passed by within minutes after the accident occurred and took the injured to the Lexington hospital. Before leaving the scene, they two boys told that a third boy, Booth, was with them and a search was immediately begun. After about two hours, the entire area had been sarched to no avail. It was then decided to get a boat, grappling hooks, and dragged the creek's bottom. At 6:30 a.m. after about ten minutes search, the body was located and brought to the surface. It was taken to the Hearne funeral home at Stanton, where an inquest was conducted y Powell Coroner Fryar, who returned a verdict of accidental drowning, following the investigation by he and a six man panel. Parents Present Mr. and Mrs. Orville Booth, Campton, parents of the victim, were notifed of the accident, and were brought here by Charles Lindon, Campton. They were present when the body was recovered. Also present was Taylor Booth, Campton, Supt of Wolfe County Schools, an uncle to the victim. Within minutes a large crowd had gathered at the scene, and everyone assisted in the search for the Booth boy. Funeral Tuesday Afternoon The body was removed from the Hearne Funeral Home to the Booth residence at Campton, Monday morning, and funeral services were scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday (yesterday) at the Campton Baptist church by the Rev. Joe Profitt, with burial in the Evans cemetery, Campton, under the direction of Hearne Funeral home. Other survivors include one brother, Marvin Lee Booth, Campton, and Supt. of Wolfe County schools, Taylor Booth, is an uncle of the deceased. Active pallbearers for the funeral at Campton Tuesday afternoon included: Jesse Johnson, Charles E. Lindon, C.W. Murphy, James Swope, Paul Lawless and Fred Terrill.
