FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN CALIFORNIA

Charles T. Byrd, son of the late William R. and Polly Stamper Byrd, 
died December 12 in San Diego, Calif., at the age of 80.  Mr. Byrd was the 
last survivor of his immediate family which was one of Wolfe County's 
earliest settlers.

The father William R. Byrd was killed by lightning, in 1881 in the old 
Masonic Hall in Campton. The son, Charles T., moved to Oklahoma in 1902 
where he practiced law, later moving to Colorado and from there to 
Pasadena, Calif., where he was living at the time of his death.
 
He was a veteran of the Spanish American war and a member of the 
Knights of Pythias.

He is survived by his wife, Rena, three daughters and one grandson of 
Oklahoma and one daughter of California.  He was a brother of the late 
James A., William A., Robert L., and Dr. Richard Byrd and Mesdames Ellen 
Drake, Gilly Ann Tutt, Margaret Little, Rosa B. Hollon, Mary Faulkner, 
Emma Stevens and Haley Byrd, all of Campton.  Mrs. J.L. Horton of 
Campton is a niece of the departed.  Luther Tutt of Campton and Will Byrd of 
Hazel Green are nephews.  Funeral services and burial were conducted in 
Pasadena, Calif.
