Banks, 26 year old veteran of World War II, ended his life by discharging a short gun. at 5:30 Monday evening, October 29, at the home of his brother-in-law, A.W. Watkins, on Meadow Branch. An inquest was held over the deceased and the jury returned a verdict of suicide. It is reported that Mr. Banks had been desponent for several days and had told members of his immediate family that he was going to take his life. He was in the post office about twenty minutes before he made his threat good and told the postmaster, Jack Smith, that he wanted him to give his check to his wife, when it came, and added. "I won't be here." Mr. Smith said he thought they were merely having family trouble and Banks intended to go away for awhile. His sister-in-law, Hazel Tyra Watkins was with him when he made the statement. In fact, he called her into the post office as if he wanted her to hear it. Mr. Banks, who received a discharge from the Army in August, had received wounds while serving. He was married to Alma Irene Tyra Graham less than a month ago. She has three children by a former marriage. Mr. Banks refused to eat supper the night of the suicide. Later, he walked into the room where his wife was lying on the bed trying to get one of the children to sleep. He did not say a word, but pointed the gun and pulled the trigger. Mr. Banks was a son of the late Joel Banks of Callaboose. He had one brother, Willie Banks of the U.S. Army, and two half-brothers.
