About Washington County, KentuckyCentral Kentucky is the home of the 10th county formed in 1792 from Nelson county. It lies in the Outer Bluegrass Region. The Salt River flows here. The county seat is Springfield. The abundance of game, water and salt brought the earliest known settlers here in 1775 from Fort Harrodsburg. James Sandusky settled on Pleasant Run in 1776; Samuel Cartwright built a home in 1779. After the Revolutionary War settlements increased - much of it as a result of grants for military service. In 1800, there were 9,050 citizens. Washington County, named for President George Washington, was originally part of Kentucky County, VA and then Jefferson County, Kentucky. In 1827, Washington County was split to form Anderson Co., then part was taken to form Marion County in 1833. There was a courthouse fire in 1797 and again in 1812. The first court was at the home of Col. John Hardin. Clerks have Marriage, Probate, and Land Records from 1792.
