~ Name Anomalies ~

In the course of indexing county records, we have come across some unexpected name variations. We hope this listing provides a ladder for someone's brick wall!

*CAUTION*: If you have a family residing in Mr. Barnett's 1870 enumeration of Somerset District, be aware that some families are enumerated twice (not always with the same surname! see Farris/Floyd below). There may be other discrepancies --

Surnames
Farris =? Floyd - the households of Reuben Farris & Reuben Floyd are nearly identical in the 1870 census
Fitch = Fitchpatrick = Fitzpatrick
Fitzpatrick = Fitchpatrick = Fitch
Floyd =? Farris - the households of Reuben Farris & Reuben Floyd are nearly identical in the 1870 census
Ford, John - "alias Owens" [Marriage Declaration dated 3 Aug 1868; he appears in 1870 census as Owens]
Hays, Christopher - "Christopher Royster, alias Hays" [Marriage Declaration dated 25 Mar 1867; he appears in 1870 census as Royster]
Hubble, Fountain & Mary A. - seem to appear as Hubble in the 1870 census, & Hudson in their marriage record
Hudson, Fountain & Mary Ann - seem to appear as Hubble in the 1870 census, & Hudson in their marriage record
Owens, John - "John Ford, alias Owens" [Marriage Declaration dated 3 Aug 1868; he appears in 1870 census as Owens]
Royster, Christopher - "alias Hays" [Marriage Declaration dated 25 Mar 1867; he appears in 1870 census as Royster]
Stigall - Matilda (White) Stigall & children: pre-1870 census/birth/tax (free black) surname = White; 1870 census surname = Stigall
