Deaths:  Funeral services were held Wednesday Aug 5 at the Downing farm near Denniston for Mrs Malinda E. Downing, She is survived by two daughters Mrs Zella Back and Mrs Liza Back and six sons, Noah Downing, Claude
 Downing, John Downing, George Downing, Hendrix Downing and Oxford Downing.
  Child dies after brief illness:  Barbara Joan Harmon, 11 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Harmon of McCausey Ridge died at the Jane Cook Hospital on Aug 4 after an illness of a few hours, she is the only child of the Harman's.  Burial was in the Back Cemetery with Rev. Grover Craft officiating.
 
 The annual Church of God Camp Meeting will be held from Aug 25 to Sept 3 at Scranton. 
 Two men held on robbery charge:  Ted Conway and Bert Williams of Means  beat William (Billy) Rothwell of Sudith and robbed him of 40c and his wallet.

 Federal agents condiscated a 50 gallon pot still in the Mariba section and arrested two men according to statement
 by agent Osmyn Botts.  Arrested were Allen Brooks, 22, Mariba and William Lawson 48, also of Mariba.  There were
 200 gallons mash, 4 gallons moonshine, 100 pounds sugar, 25 pounds corn malt, and minor items.

County school to open Sept 5
 New office will be located in the Wells Building across from the courthouse.  The office will move from the second floor
 above the office of lawyer Schwartz.
 Uncle Sam Morrison had been in the Jane Cook Hospital for several days, he is now at the home of his daughter.
 People are getting ready to cut and house their tobacco crops.
 Word has been received that the two-year old son of Ray Pitts fell and broke his arm.
 Mr Buchanan of Bourbon County was here this week in a car   and landed in the creek after failing to make a curve,
 Rag Wells and Red Henry's wrecker pulled him out.
 Williams Building nears compeltion, work on the filling station installed here by Kash Williams is nearing completion.
 Plans are for a complete lubrication service, an accessory counter and gasoline.
 Lyons Family hold's reunion in Rowan-The Thomas Jefferson Lyons family held its first reunion Sunday Aug 20 at  Woodland Park, Morehead
 Remodeling of Wells Hotel and Little's Restaurant is practically finished, reports that the new equipment will be of the same or of a higher quality than that of the Golden Horseshow.
 
 The Dog Trot road had become almost impassable because of heavy overgrowth of trees and bushes and the chance of
 seeing a car was almost impossible.  A group of farmers got together last week and did a splendid job.  This was on a
 rural road for which funds are appropriated.  Those who did the work were:  Tony Rothwell, Kash Rothwell, George
 Downs,  Willie Cornwell, Clayton Beer, Cause Pergram, Eugene Pergram, Edward Blevins, Joe Ballard, Harlan  and Orbie
 Tackett, D. H. Collier, R. C. Ringo and three school boys, Ronie Rothwell, Jimmie Downs, and Bobby Reynolds.
 Bob Ringo furnished a tractor to stay on the job and mow each side of the road.
 Soft drinks were furnished by L. F. Cole and jsut as the first case was opened, up drove Dr. Graves, who stopped and
 drunk an orange crush with the boys.  The men had the job done by noon and did not charge, but just as they were
 finishing, up drove John Robinson who gave each man a half dollar, he appreciated the work as well as did Dr Graves.

Hedger Reunion held Aug 20 at the home of Anderson Hedger in Wyoming, Ill
 Frenchburg will have a Baptist Church after this Sunday, according to an announcement made this week.  The actual
 constitution of a Baptist Church is set for Sunday September 3 in Frenchburg.
 
 The Ratliff Reunion will be held Sunday September 3 on the fair grounds at Mt Sterling.
 There will be a special called meeting of the Indian Creek Church at 2:00 pm on Sept 2 for deciding upon building of a
 new church and to aprove the disposal of the old one.  Also, there is a Memorial meeting at the Patrick Graveyard on Sept 17, dinner will be served on the grounds.
 
 Deaths: Mrs Vina Byrd, 75, wife of Robert Byrd of Suddith passed away on Aug 18 at 12pm after an illness of three
 weeks.  She is survived by 4 daughters Mrs Pauline Aaarmitage of Dayton, Ohio; Mrs Lyda Puckett  and Mrs  Mina Downs of Middletown, Ohio and Mrs Rosa O'Hara of Frenchburg.  Two sons Fay and Floyd of Suddith and three brothers Boone, Knute and Joe Ballard of Rothwell and 25 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren, burial in Smith Cem.

Homer Amburgey, a veteran of World War I died at the Louisville Veterans Hospital on Sept 17, 1950, he was born
 in Menifee Co, the son of the late Bun and Crisp Amburgey, he is survived by his wife Ida Amburgey, one sister Essie
 Spencer and 4 brothers, N. M. Amburgey, Joel Amburgey, Beckham Amburgey and Lee Amburgey, burial in
 Amburgey Cemetry at Fagan, the American legion was in charge.
 
 Two arrested, charged as "Bootleggers"  warrants were issued for J. Howard Street and Hollie Higgins Simpkins
 after witnesses had seen illegal purchases being made.
 
 The used clothing room across from the college is doing fine work.

 Telephone service at the Frenchburg switchboard was almost completely stalled this week, Several received out of
 town calls at the News office.

 Funeral service for Mrs Humphree, the mother of Mrs Wayne Sexton was held in Flemingsburg.

In the service:  Cpl. Ralph Cannoy, son of Mr and Mrs Wade Cannoy was home on week end pass.
 Word was received that Clifford Hunter was killed in action in Korea on Sept 13.  He is the son of Mr and Mrs Curtis
 Hunter of Germantown, Ohio and the grandson of Lizzie and Curtis Hughes formerly of Menifee Co.
 
 An estimated 1,500 people attended the annual Agricultural and School Fair held Saturday.  Among the winners for
 the prizes was the both sponsored by the News and operated by Korea School, it was awarded a blue ribbon and a
 prize of ten dollars which was the biggest in the fair. 
 Several 4-H members were awared ribbons and winners in the baby contest were: 30 months and up-Nancy Williams
 first; Victor Carter second; Susan Faulkner third.  Twelve months and up: Stephen Cope first; Diana Faulkner second
 and Gale Wilhoit third;  Under twelve months: Brenda Sue Cannoy first, Jouce Wynn second and Janet Ruth Cantrell
 third

 CITY PASSES ORDINANCE:  "It shall be unlawful for anyone, firm or corporation, to deposit waste, rubbish or
 trash on Sycamore Steeet leading from Walnut Street to Beaver Creek, and any one, firm or corporation, violating

Birthday celebrated by W. S. Back, age 75 on Oct 15 at his home at Artville.  A basket dinner was served on the lawn
 for 66 persons.
 Robert Harold Swartz, Frenchburg Attorney, was killed instantly last Friday morning near Winchester, he will be missed
 by  his friends here and by his Masonic Brothers.
 Taylor Combs, 83 died Tuesday nite-a lifelong resident of Frenchburg died at his home after a long illness. Survived
 by wife, Mrs Ida Kash Combs, three daughters, Mrs Ora Cox, Mrs George Eastin and Mrs Norman Statton, three borthers
 John Combs, Robert Combs, and Brooks Combs, three sisters, Mrs Helen Hovermale, Mrs Belle Hedger and Mrs Emma
 Osborn.  He was buried in Mt Sterling.

 Death:  Mrs Ina Williams, 62, died at Jane Cook Hospital on Monday.  Burial in Macpelah Cem, Mt Sterling.

 Mrs Den Pieratt, Miss Cora Swim, Mrs Maude Hamilton, three brothers Marvin Swim, Earl Swim and  Claude Swim.
 She was a native and lifelong resident of Menifee County and a memeber of the Methodisth Church.
 
 A birthday dinner was set in the home of Mr and Mrs S. E. Williams in honor of her father, W. M. Trimble's 78th birthday
 and their daughter Mrs Earl Wynn's birthday.
 
 IDA BUCHANAN says:  Back 47 years ago when I began teaching, I didn't get enough for the whole term to make a
 down payment on a T Model Ford.  Only $21.50 per month and board came out of that. Many teachers like myself,
 W. K. Wells, G. I. Becraft, C. F. Ringo, S. B. Raney, Farmer Bashford, Frank Lawson, George W. Buchanan and many
 other old-timers taught for less than one-third what a teacher in the county get's for a term today.

 These cold days have brought death to many hogs around here.  Kern Wells now has fresh meat on his table.
 Passage of Bond Issue at Polls Held Major Progressive Step For County"  The Menifee County voters passed a Health
 Unit bond in hopes of creating better health services for the county.
 Trade'n Travel:  Earl Rowe traded a 1929 Dodge car to Clinton Powell for a fat hog.  Clinton does not know how to
 drive a car and is planning to go to Wisconsin.  He is going to try to get Bob Ingram to make the trip with him and
 drive for him.  Bob is a jolly good fellow, full of jokes and fun and we know he will enjoy the trip as well as keep
 Clinton in good spirits.  Clinton lives at the Hiram Wright place and cannot get his car closer than a half-mile to his
 place.  He would not sell or trade his car but might trade his farm for one better located so he could drive up to his
 door.   (BWI NOTE:  Bob Ingram could not drive a car either.)
 
 Celebrates birthday:  Mrs Nancy Ann Heizer was guest of honor at a surprise birthday dinner given by her daughter,
 Mrs Hicks Wells.  Mrs Heizer was 82.
 
Nov. 24, 1950  

Pictured are Mr and Mrs Felix Tackett and their 13 children .  Mr Tackett said they use 50# of lard a month, 50# of beans
 a month, 100 # of flour every three weeks and 100 # of meal every month.  Also, better than two and 1/2 tons of potatoes
 a year plus other things. Felix was born in Pike Co and his wife was born in Lawrence Co, they are ages 41 and 36,
 respectively. The children, 4 in school range in age from 7 months to 10 years.
 
 Deaths:  W. J. Culbertson, 76 died Nov 9 at the home of his son-in-law at Means.  Survived by widow, Rhoda Helton
 Culbertson, seven children and 52 grandchildren.
 Mrs Mattie Thomas, wife of R. L. Thomas, of Middletown died Nov 14, the body was brought to the family cemetery
 at Means for burial, her brothr Clay Chambers was buried there two weeks before.
 Mrs Eliza Steele claimed by death on Nov 26.  She was 84.  Burial in Thomas Cemetery, Survived by three son's, two daughter's
 several grandchildren and great agrandchildren and two sisters Mrs Lizzie Hatfield, Suddith and Mrs Sarah Conley of
 Oceanna, W. Va.
 Mrs Susan Rowe, 76 died Nov 15 at the home of her daughter Madge Conway.  Survivors are daughters:
 Mrs Madge Conway, Mrs George Bowling of Dayton, Ohio and Mrs Wilburn Eadds of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs Inez Hill
 of Lousiville, one son Nesbitt Rowe of Detroit, Mi and several half brothers and sisters; burial was in family cemetery.

Storms isolate Menifee and Snow Blocks Highways......from early Saturday afternoon to until late on Monday there
 was no telephone service and no newspapers were received.  Old times said there had never been a time when there
 had been such a complete isolation of the town.
 Local officers discovered a truck parked on the street late Tues night and asked the driver to move it to an isolated spot
 out of town because it was loaded with dynamite.
 Rabies outbreak is feared by the Town Council.
 Archie Hall, 12, son of Omer and Ada Ingram Hall was found dead in the back yard of his home in Cincinnati, Ohio.
 he had been playing with a balloon and when found the plastic balloon was covering his face.
 Jurors named for December court.
 Highway Commissioner Joh Keek announced that Menifee was among contracts approved:  Frenchburg-Scranton
 Road-culvert and traffic bound aproaches at Long branch of Beaver Creek, .02 mile.  A. W. Walker and son, Mt
 Sterling $11,991.00
 
Dec. 8, 1950  

Sheriff Earl Wells has killed another dog.  This makes 7 killed because of the rabies outbreak.
 Deaths:;  Menifee Spencer, son of the late Eli and Mattie Phelps Spencer and a member of the Christian Church died
 in Lexington of a heart attach.  He was a Menifee Co. native and employee of Avon. Burial in Machpelah Cemetery
 He is survived by three son's and six daughter's, all of Ohio and three sister's and two brother's.
 Leck Carpenter of Korea died Nov 24, burial in Johnson Cemetery.
 Mrs Magaret Ingram, 88 died at the home of her daughter near Rothwell.  Survivors are daughters Pearlie Ingram,
 Rothwell, Mrs Oliver Cassidy Middletown and Mrs Louellen Ballard Frenchburg, Robert Ingram and Charlie Ingram
 both of Rothwell.

DEATHS::  Judge W. C. Smith, died Dec 8 at his home near Campton
 James Davis, 75 died after he has been seriously burned in a fire at his home.  Survivors are his wife Priscilla Halsey
 Davis and three living children. Mrs. Rollie Wilson, Mrs. Ada Halsey and Mrs. Neveda Henry, four children preceded
 him in death
 Paul Reffitt was found not guilty by the Menifee County court.  He had been charged in the death of Otis Wells.
 Scheduled for trial are the Chambers brothers, Carl and Clifton of Arson, breaking into a dwelling and detaining a
 woman against her will.
 IRVINE, KY Beverly L. C. Gow, 80 retired L. & N. RR Employee died Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs Bert
 Masters.  He was the great grandson of Daniel Boone.  Burial was in West Irvine Cemetery.
