Mr. Curt Gambrel, 83, of Flat Lick, passed away Wednesday evening, December 26, 2007 in the Pineville Community Hospital. He was a son of the late Jim and Mary Lavenda Powell Gambrel born on February 7, 1924 at Flat Lick. Mr. Gambrel was a former service manager with Gambrel Chevrolet in Corbin. He was a member of the Concord Baptist Church and served as a Democrat Election Commissioner. He faithfully served in the United States Army during World War II and fought in five major military battles in Northern France and Central Europe. On November 8, 1943, he united in marriage with Irene Hammons in Pineville and to this union two children were born. Irene preceded him in death on March 21, 1994. He later united in marriage with Mary Lawson on February 10, 1996 in Louisville. Survivors include his children, Jimmy Charles Gambrel and wife, Debbie, of Pineville and Londa Lou Sowders and husband, Rev. Larry, of Barbourville; a sister, Ivanetta Alstott and husband, Nelson, of Jeffersonville, IN; a brother, James E. Gambrel and wife, Pat, of Louisville; three grandchildren, Rev. Larry Sowders Jr. and wife, Angie, Jamie Sowders and David Gambrel and wife, Hope; six great grandchildren; five stepchildren; 16 step grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren; among other loved ones and dear friends who mourn his passing. His funeral service was conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, December 29 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Larry Sowders and Rev. Larry Sowders Jr. officiating. Mr. Gambrel was laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery with military funeral honors by the American Legion. Casket bearers were Raymond Curtis Smith, Matt Smith, Clandis Smith, Gary Smith, Billy Smith, J. C. Smith, Calloway Gray Jr. and A. J. Smith. Honorary bearers were Dr. Steven K. Morgan, Dan Wesley Walton, Delmer Bright, Cotton Baker, Garrett Gray and Walter C. Hopper Jr. Expressions of sympathy may go to the American Cancer Society in loving memory of Mr. Gambrel. Arrangements were under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
