Charles Earl "Chuck" Akers, age 66, of French Lick, Ind., died Thursday, October 18, 2007, at 4:18 PM at University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Ky. due to an auto accident. Chuck was born in Dwale, KY. on February 14, 1941 to the late Cleo Akers and the late Sabra (Amburgy) Akers. He married Leslie Shaw on Ocober 19, 1963 and she survives. Mr. Akers graduated from Union College in Barbourville, KY in 1964 and later received a Masters Degree from Indiana University. Mr. Akers is retired from the Springs Valley School Corporation as teacher and coach. He has been a Starter at the "Hill Golf Course" in French Lick for 25 years. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Newton Stewart Masonic Lodge, the BAJA - Born Again Jocks Association where he played softball each winter in Arizona. Chuck had been football coach at Springs Valley Jr-Sr High School for 20 years before his retirement. He had also coached both boys and girls basketball and golf. He played football, basketball, baseball and was a swimmer during his college years. He has been an official for both high school basketball and baseball. He was an unofficial member of the Veterans Motorcycle Club and had been a sports broadcaster for WFLQ for 24 years. Mr. Akers touched the lives of thousands during his lifetime. He is survived by his wife Leslie Akers of French Lick; Two Daughters, Libby Pancake (Tony) of Zionsville, Ind. -Kelli Matthews (Patrick) of Allen, Texas; One Sister, Carolyn Hall (Clyde) of McArthur, Ohio; Seven grandchildren, Allie, T.J., Trent, &Annabelle Pancake and Mackenzie, Mollie-Claire, &Madigan Matthews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Arrangements are being handled by T.L. Pinnick Mortuary. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM Wednesday, October 24, 2007 and from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the SPRINGS VALLEY JR-SR HIGH GYMNASIUM. Funeral service will be at SPRINGS VALLEY JR-SR HIGH GYMNASIUM at 2:30 PM Thursday, October 25, 2007, with Rev. Bud Kielhorn &Rev. Steve Singlestad officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in French Lick, Ind. The family requests IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorial contributions be made to the Chuck Akers Scholarship Fund that has been set up through the Orange County Community Foundation.
