Summer at Goebel

My grandparents were Ealie and Bertha
Haas and they were wonderful people. Like most children in the 1950's
I loved to spend time at their house, especially in the summer when
school was out.
Mamaw would allow me to spend the day
at Goebel Park swimming pool. She would pack a sack lunch for me and
I would walk from Pershing Avenue to the Park by myself and back at
the end of the day. Of course, I would get sunburned due to lack of
sunscreen in those days and Mamaw would soak a brown paper bag in
vinegar to place on my sunburn to sooth it. Then she would prepare
a nice hot supper and we would eat together. After supper my Papaw
and I would play checkers and dominoes while he sipped hot tea. What
memories, I hope yours are as fond.
