of Kenton County Residents
Some of My Best
Memories

My father, Walter Schneider,
managed the Kroger stores in West Covington and Ludlow in the 1940s.
We lived on Elm street in Covington and on Saturday evenings (weather
permitting) my brother and I would roller skate down Highway Ave in
Covington to the Krogers that was at the corner of Highway and Altamont
Ave. We would then ride home with Dad. My Mom Elsie Watkins Schneider
was born and raised on Hooper Street in Ludlow and she met Dad at
the Lagoon when the amusement park burned down.
When the great Ohio river flooded
each year, the people on Hooper street would move their belongings
onto the street behind them and wait for the water to recede. The
firemen would hose the houses out and after just a few days, the residents
would move back in. My cousin Joanie Miley and I walked down Hooper
street in hip boots through the silt that remained. We thought it
great fun. I'm sure the residents didn't agree with us, but, kids
have a different slant on events.
