New Hope Presbyterian Cemetery
Hillsboro KY
1822-1936

This page contents was contributed by Teddy Brock

So many family names mentioned in Early History of Hillsboro are indexed in the New Hope Cemetery. Of course, I have read all this material so many times TRYING to catch my mistakes before "going to press" that I have become so familiar with the names and family and almost feel that I am intimately acquainted with most of them.

For sixty-five years the New Hope Presbyterian Cemetery has been neglected and abandoned. The cemetery was overgrown and vandals cut the trees and let them fall, destroying the monuments. The cemetery was also used as a trash dump. Headstones fell over and were covered with debris, trash, fallen tree limbs, vines. Some had been covered over so long that they had to be dug up. Some were buried up to a foot deep, and others were broken. I have tried to set as many of the stones in their proper places as possible.

Here is a list of names, some of which are probably not recorded. This list is probably a majority of the burials at New Hope Cemetery, but this list does not include unmarked graves. Only fieldstone markers mark some of the graves. Some of the headstones are missing for unknown reasons, and some of the names have faded on the headstones that remain. By doing this, I hope that this will help those people who would like to find the final resting place of an ancestor. While I have had to cut back my time cleaning the cemetery, others have taken over and finished what I started. I hope people will continue to keep the cemetery in good shape. Hopefully, more people will take an interest in the cemetery that it will look like it did a century ago.

BRAD HARN

February 2000

WE OWE A HUGE DEBT OF GRATITUDE TO THE HARN FAMILY: .SANDY, NORMAN and their son BRAD for indexing New Hope Cemetery, that we all may benefit from its publication. Special recognition is due Brad Harn for initiating the cleanup of this pioneer cemetery and all those who gave so freely of their time. I'm sure it was a formidable undertaking. I also have a partial reading done circa 1950 by William M. Talley and Mrs. J. Kidwell Grannis. In the interest of filling in missing data that may have been obscured these past 50 years, I have used information from both lists. I might add that there were a few instances where there was a difference in interpretation of the information on the stones, or perhaps and error in transcribing (ask me how easy THAT is to do). I have decided it best to give both observations and have used a system to represent the secondary list of William Talley. It is as follows: an asterisk (*) before a NAME indicates the entire entry came from Mr. Talley's list and was never on the Harn list (a marker that may no longer exist). A (/*) was used in the birth/death column when conflicting information for a date was found in Mr. Talley's list. The additional information is provided, because as researchers, we know we have to consult several sources before making a determination of the facts. Within this very cemetery is a stone that I read Frances T. Gray, son of F.W. & M.L. Gray, November 2, 1855-July 27, 1877. I thought that my video and my photograph supported those dates. My family database had conflicting information, which showed that Frances was born in 1875. After scrutinizing the video AND photo I could barely discern that there was a number 7 chiseled over that first 5. I now concur that child was born in 1875.

I took a few photos of New Hope Cemetery when I was there in April 2000 and they can be accessed online for others to view. Anyone interested in seeing them can contact me at: trbrock@erinet.com. Directions to cemetery:  My Fleming County map shows it thus; From Hillsboro at Junction 111, road to the west is 154, to the east is 1013. Take 154 to right on Sunset Locust Rd. and the first right from there is New Hope Rd. Don't expect a road sign and don't ignore the road because it looks like a farm lane at first glance...this is from personal experience.......Teddy (Gray) Brock....October 26, 2000

FOOTNOTE: Hand Carved Stone...Oldest grave in cemetery...Could not read except "died in 1807". Pre-dates the Church. [This is undoubtedly the grave of Alexander Ramsay. Dr. William Talley did a partial reading of the cemetery in 1950 and among his list is an Alexander Ramsay, d. Jan. 1, 1807. I received a query from Alice Ramsay, descendant of Alexander, to wit: "As I said, my ancestor's name was Alexander Ramsay and he died 1 Jan 1807. He's said to have died of an accident, but that was a report by a grandson many years later (1904), so I have no idea how accurate that might be. It's supposed to say that he was 52 years old at death on the stone, too."]
