Brick Union Graveyard

Contributed by Renee Schaeffer

On Wednesday, April 17, 1985 (No name of paper) Caren Dawn Curotto-Prater wrote an article about the Brick Union Graveyard outside of Flemingsburg, located on Hwy. 32, east next to Brewer Tractor Sales. This is a summary of that article.

The graveyard, in 1985, was abandoned and overgrown. This graveyard was the final resting place recording births back to the 1720’s and 1740’s as well as burials dated 1811. At least two Revolutionary War Soldiers are buried there besides a war with Mexico veteran. His tombstone reads as follows:

In memory of William Hargis of Breathitt County, Kentucky who volunteered during the war with Mexico in September 1847. He was honorably discharged at Jalappa, in Mexico in consequence of ill health, and died on his return home, at Cincinnati, February 16, 1848 and at his request was brought to Fleming County and buried - aged 24 years and by profession a lawyer.

Also one of Fleming Counties most famous forefather, Michael Cassidy and wife Mary Evans were buried at Brick Union but now rest in Fleming County Cemetery.

In the beginning a log church stood near the road. Later the brick structure was erected which opened for all denominations. The church is long since gone and only the markers remain.

Caren provided me with the following information on these burials:
